assignment:
the article this week is about essential skills kids should learn
- i want you to read the article and then post your comments here. i want at least a paragraph of writing. the idea is to do some reflective thinking so i do NOT want you to summarize. go beyond just regurgitating the ideas.
- i would like this process to spark some conversations, so the second part of this assignment is to read and comment intelligently on someone else's post. let's get a dialogue going here.
grading
this assignment will be worth 20 points in the learning assignment category. grading will be based on...

- 10 pts for intelligent comments on someone else's post

I agree so much with this article. Finding independence is so important for a child to learn. Being independent makes it so they can be happy on their own, which I find extremely important, as I believe it is important to rely on yourself more than you do on others. I also find tolerance a very important thing to teach to children. In today's world, there is so much hate and intolerance being taught, which I find just heartbreaking and wrong. Finally, I found dealing with change an excellent point. Technology is constantly evolving and changing, and it is important to be able to change and evolve right along with it. Overall, this was an excellent article.
ya its good to have your own independence otherwise youll be a kid all your life. not taking charge and doing things your self. Also technology is crazy i cant wait to see how our world will evolve or even if it will...... :O
absolutely, i find the independence part much more important that the other ones. however i completely enjoy the tolerance of witch i have. with tolerance you may be a real wimp and the world has no room for wimps.
I definitely agree that tolerance needs to be taught to kids. It's just stupid for parents to teach their kids to be ignorant and hate others for no reason; we're all human beings. Also, I agree that you need to be able to rely on yourself, and not on other people to do things for you.
Yes this is exactly what I think. People just need to learn to get along.
I agree with you completely. Kids need to be taught how to rely on themselves and not others.
i agree! having independence as a child is a great thing. todays world is changing every moment. being able to count on yourself is huge. i know people who rely on everyone else to get by in life and it is really getting them no where.
exactly, independence is the only thing that will get a child through its life.
I very much like the idea, i never thought about what it would be like if i had never gone to school learning differently, most people think thats hippies but its really not. I think this would be very interesting to try and people should try it.
yeah i also agree with the fact that people should try it.
I agree with what your saying about people should try it and also people think that hippies don't go to school.
I actually kind of understand what jake is saying now, and agree. It didn't quite make sense at work but after a long hard conversation with him about this article, I finally grasp his concept of being a hippy and how it might be good for more hippy children in todays society. It is quite the ingenius solution and think we should start it immediately.
I agree with this article because i can't imagine not going to school learning different things. Being independent makes you feel good with yourself. Sometimes change is a hard thing to deal with. Especially with technology. Almost like when we get new phones a newer one comes out the next week and we just cant keep up with technology. But if we are able to go with change we would be able to keep up with technology.
it's funny, no matter how many elaborate essays are written, the semi universal core values are always always always what we learned in kindergarten. most skills are learned once. these are learned forever.
that is true, i think they need to teach more upon these skills
I liked the fact that technology advancing but i wish it would slow down a lot. I liked the styles of old teaching and we should go back to some of that. I agree with evolving and changing but i wound like to use some of their styles.
I love this article. I feel that kids should learn to deal with things on their own and not depend on their parents or other adults to deal with the situation. They will never learn how to deal with tough situations like change, adapting to a new community, ect. Today the kids depend on adults to help them with everything and thats not the right thing to do. Kids need to teach themselves how to deal with things or else they will never make it in the real world. They need to learn how to solve problems on their own and be happy on their own.
Right , i agree . Parents won't always be there and kid need to know how to react to a situation .
I completely agree with this article. Dealing with change was the one that meant the most to me, as I've had to deal with a lot of change in my life as I moved from school to school with my family. I also really agree with the being independent. I have taken care of myself as well as my little brother and sister for years, and I feel fairly confident that I can be fine on my own. Everyone's kids should learn these skills.
I totally agree with the idea that kids should learn to be more independent. Today, so many kids go around relying on others and making excuses, it's important to be able to take care of and rely on yourself.
^ This. Kids need to learn to rely on themselves and not run to someone else for everything they need. Try sending your child to a store clerk first to get the total and you just watch, let them learn.
i agree with this because students need to learn to be independent and work on their own. it also makes it easier for teachers so that way they dont have to teach as much. i believe Independence is the key to becoming a better student.
This article is amazing. It talks about all of the things that today's youth needs. People especially need to work on tolerance. Perhaps going further than just tolerant of others to maybe respecting other peoples' differences?
Tolerance is kind of a hot-button issue around the country right now, what with conservatives and hardcore religious folks being almost universally against things like homosexuality, but some of us are smart enough to realize that they really aren't that different from the rest of us.
I think that kids should learn on their own . I think if you want to learn you learn more , if you really don't care then it just goes through one ear out the other. I also think they should be tought things at young ages because when your litttle you learn more , like my little cousin is learning spansh and he's 5 ...
I like this article. it shows how kids start to learn on their own and start to rely on their selves. "If a child can solve problems, she can do any job." this part of the article is where i do not agree. i dont think knowing how to solve problems in general gives the opportunity to do ANY job. knowing how to do the job, or learning how to do the job gets the job done. i also agree with the fact that passion drives to get something done. but its also the goals that you set for yourself, and also motivation. over all i agree with most of the article. but some parts i disagree
Independence is the most important thing here for a child, it can't think that things will always be provided for it. They need to learn that it and only it will be able to provide for itself, people aren't going to hand them things in life. Life is about loyalty and hard work, learn it or fail.
All of these skills are very important for a growing child. Each of these skills teach a separate lesson to the child about life. These will prepare the child for life in the adult life and dealing with problems as they come. A very good read, very intelligent points being made.
Reading this article, I see things I wish I had been taught more in my own experience growing up. (I still love you, Mom and Dad!) I feel that if I had been exposed to other cultures and people of other sexual orientations, etc. earlier, I would probably be a better person. Thinking for myself is something I also had to self-learn, rather than taking for granted that something from a book is the undeniable truth, and finding out that perhaps there is a greater truth out there to be found - the human experience.
this article has me at a stand still. i have at least learned 7 on these essential skills, there for i have to got out in the deadly house hold and take in these skills for my well being. now im no going to tell ya what the two skill i have yet to learn, but i will let you know that when i learn the two much needed skills i will be able to take on the world even though i already can in a jiffy.
I think that finding a passion is one of the most important "skills" on this list, if you can call it that. I think that whatever your passion(s) are, it is what makes you you. If you can make something of your passions and follow it at far as you can, be great at it, and that's what people will always remember you as. So it is definitely important to be passionate in life. And should be taught to kids as soon as possible at a young age.
