learning assignment - due friday february 3

description:

industry representatives tell us over and over that they are looking to hire competent designers who are able to express themselves well in writing and conversation. in the design world there are plenty of people who can create amazing things, but few who are able to communicate clearly and effectively. these little article assessments will help you to understand the industry and get practice in communicating your ideas. winner!

assignment:

the article this week is about why every school must teach design.

  1. i want you to read the article and  then post your comments here. i want at least a paragraph of writing. the idea is to do some reflective thinking so i do NOT want you to summarize. go beyond just regurgitating the ideas.
  2. i would like this process to spark some conversations, so the second part of this assignment is to read and comment intelligently on someone else's post. let's get a dialogue going here.

grading

this assignment will be worth 20 points in the learning assignment category. grading will be based on...

  • 10 pts for intelligent comments on the reading
  • 10 pts for intelligent comments on someone else's post

What I got from this article is that everything in the world was designed and made into its own unique design. When you think about it.. why were trees designed the way they were or why the roads, nature, everything etc. In the last paragraph they stated that nowadays details are lost in artwork in Design Schools and designers.. and what I got from that is everyone is more worried about the bigger picture than the smaller things that make the image the way it is.

the main thing is everybody wants to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money, design gets lost in greed.

This is a really good point. Everyone is just looking for the quick fix to things, because we live in a world where everything is quick and nearly instant. A production is really nothing, and never nearly as good without all the "behind the scenes" work.

I agree with you Grant that everything needs to happen instantly or else it's not really worth the time to wait. I mean, we have mints that melt in your mouth for you, yogurt in tubes so we can eat them anywhere, and really who knows what else! But it's because people have become impatient and so we feel obligated to take all the shortcuts to get our designs out quicker.

I agree, because if things don't happen right away its just not worth waiting for.

Overall I can agree with is article. It really makes you think why and how did everything become designed the way it is. All together learning about design through school could really help one appreciate and maybe even one day learn why certain things are designed the way they are.

i like how you said that. its so true that if they teach it to us now people will have a better understand and appriciation for the world of design. so i agree.

design thinking is a process of seeing things and placing them in your mind to create a reality unlike the one that everyone else can see. design thinking cant happen over night it takes time to notice and understand what it is you are designing. this article actually helped me understand what design thinking really is and i will remember this information the next time i start to draw or imagine something great.

    reply to Jackie ho............

i completely agree with you. everything was created in a unique design. everyone decides to notice the larger picture instead of the smaller things that make the whole image as it is. i hope everyone will read these and decide to look at all the small that makes the magnificent.

ive never really thought about how complex living beings are, imagine if we had to be created by code, pages and pages of div's and ordered lists, not even just that but we evolve daily, we learn and we grow there would have to be 10 people plugging code into us all the time just keep up

I definitely agree with this. As complicated as building a website is with all the codes..it would be way more complex with a human if we were built by code.

      great comment!

I think that pretty much sums us up. We're always adding things we know, just like a list it can keep growing based on it's potential.

It's amazing to think that the code in ourselves literally works out its own bugs over the course of many generations to adapt to changes in our environment.

I really like the idea that design shouldn't be a strict educational thing. And that it should be a thing that the student decides for himself. But what should be taught in schools is how to come about making designs. The creative design process is a good thing to refine so that you can pump out designs that you are happy with, quickly and consistently. It's important for a designer to use their everyday inspiration to create products. And without the knowledge of how to do that, it would be a little difficult to do it.

I agree with you saying that the design process should be taught in school, at least reinforced as more important that they do now.

"Visit the Vatican once and you will know how complex designs can a human mind generate. They just keep getting better with every passing minute in the Vatican." I 100% agree with this! I visited the Vatican last spring and it was crazy how much detail there was on the ceiling and on the walls. The painter was nearly blind because of all the paint dripping into his eyes and yet his work was still remarkable. The proportions were perfect and you can tell that he took his time to make something amazing.

The first paragraph before the main article kind of put me off at first, as the writer sounds full of himself when he says "Every design is so beautifully crafted that you won’t notice anything unless you actually look at it the way I want you to." But overall I agree with his most general point: that everybody must expand their horizons. If design students are required to learn math and science, then the least the kids who like math and science can do is learn a bit of design. It makes learning more interesting too, learning how design really does connect with the more analytical subjects.

I agree completely about the first paragraph, I found it kind of hard to take seriously at first.

What I got from this article is that everywhere you go and look there is design. There could just be a simple letter on anything and that's a design someone has made. Design should not be an educational thing, people can just come up with anything to make it a piece of art or design.

I don't like the idea of design being taught in school but I think a lot of other people would. The article makes me want think hard about life and how everything was created. I like breaking things down into there simplest form and thinking of new ways things could be made.

The world isn't overwhelming. Calm down. The idea of the world is crazy but it's still normal to us. The class would be awesome in high school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I definitely wish that they taught design in school. It would make a great addition to the art programs already. I never really thought about the concept of design-thinking. I agree that design is everywhere, and because of this fact, design should be taught in some way or form at schools.

I agree i think it steps away from the closed minded areas that school is based on gives you space to breathe and get reative and open your abilities.

I think it's cool to think of the world as a design. Yet it seems a bit overwhelming to have that many ideas come together in the on big product of life. I like the idea where it said that when teaching design it shouldn't be a strict subject. Students should have the freedom to express their design ideas in the class. I agree when making a design you should know how everything is going to interact with everything else down to the smallest details.

I think design started with the smallest organisms and gradually evolved with them. This is why the world isnt overwhelming for people to look at because everyone is used to it.

Teaching design would have defiantly helped a lot in school, especially art classes. Instead, I seen a lot of my art classes teaching you how you should be designing rather then coming up with something yourself. You see a lot of people more worried about what other people see their work as rather than actually having an meaning to it.

I think the basis of web design should be taught in schools. for a few reasons one being that the use of photoshop and other web designing softwares can be helpful in many other ways as well. the other being that our schools push so hard on the basics that the students who do love art and creating are discuraged to take a step out there because they dont have the resources they need or a mentor to turn to for that matter. i dont think it should be mandated but i do think that it should be offered for people who do take an intrest in it. I think the schools that do supply this option just have it as a space filler and its not really equip with the basic learning tools needed but rather the knock of versions of the tools just to save the money and fill the space.

yes i do think every school should teach design and that way kids can learn to have patience with the arts. and to learn new skills.

I agree with the article that design is not a skill that one can be taught; but can be encouraged. Design is a very important aspect of our modern culture, consumers are lured by good design. With the huge demand for good designers it is important that schools provide the tools and time for children to explore creativity.
